thanks very much, dan, for that. an unemployment surprise that could impact the race for the white house. the labor department reporting today that the jobless rate fell to 7.8% last month. that's the lowest level since president obama took office. and hiring was stronger than originally reported throughout the summer. our chief national correspondent john king is joining us now. john, take us inside these new numbers. >> wolf, no question that the headline, the lower rate, some job growth last month encouraging for the president as we get close to the election. there's a lot of data that makes you suggest this is still a tough recovery, but this is the united states unemployment rate during the obama presidency. you see now when you track it all out, up above 10% at one point, we are now exactly at the same point we were when the president took office. that's encouraging for the white house. of course they wish it were lower, but below 8%. that's something the president and governor romney have talked about for some

joining me now, former israeli ambassador to the united nations, dan gillerman. good evening. >> good evening, judge. good to be with you. >> good to have you, ambassador. you just heard the prime minister talk about a red line. is this issue of a red line as real as the prime minister has stated before the united nations? >> it is very, very real. i think one of the problems is that the world or part of the world think this is a reality show. this is no reality show. this is real. this is not survivor where somebody gets chucked off the island. this is about real survival of the jewish state and in fact of civilization as we know it and that is why drawing a red line and making it very, very clear to this extreme fundamentalist regime in iran and its ranting president that there will not be a nuclear iran is so important today. >> and you know, ambassador, for the years that i have been following, you know, the politics of what is going on between the united states and israel i cannot remember there being such a sense of a disconnect between the united states an

cnn's dan lothian is live for us in denver with some white house reaction to the debate last night. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. first of all, what you're hearing from the obama campaign is that a mission that in fact governor romney did have a strong performance last night, but they're going after the substance, pointing to what they say are flaws and distortions in his policies, and overall, they don't believe that the performance by the president last night and the performance by governor romney will in any way shift this race dramatically. we'll have to wait and see. i mean, we'll be watching in key battleground states like ohio or even here in colorado, taking a look at the polling over the coming days to see if, in fact, things will change. but the bottom line for the campaign is they believe that the president came in here and did what he set out to do, which is to have a conversation with the american people. the problem for the campaign is that governor romney came in here to have more than a conversation. he challenged the president. he did not back down.
